To promote the identification, protection, and preservation of the cultural and natural heritage sites of the whole World. This is the objective of the work developed by Unesco (United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization) as for the sites that are considered valuable heritage sites for mankind.
One of the main activities of the organization is the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, which has been adopted by Brazil in September of 1977.
In Unesco’s evaluation, the cultural diversity is mankind’s common heritage. For that, it should be consolidated in the benefit of the present and future generations. Under that concept, monuments, groups of buildings, or sites that have historical, aesthetic, archeological, scientific, ethnological or anthropological value are considered cultural heritages.
In Brazil, Unesco works in partnership with the three governmental spheres –the federal, state, and local ones – as well as with the civil society. As far as tourism is concerned, the organization qualifies Embratur (Brazilian Tourist Board) to elaborate and implement projects for the promotion of the Brazilian tourist destinations that have cultural value.
