Serra da Canastra National Park (Canastra Mountain Ridge National Park)

Created to preserve the springs of the São Francisco River, the Serra da Canastra National Park has many tall cliffs, where we can admire the beauty of its many beautiful waterfalls. That type of landscape attracts those who like adventure sports, such as rappel, canyoneering, and cascading.   The area also has other attractions, all signaled within the perimeter of the Park, and it is possible to get to them by car, on good dirt roads.   The District of São Roque de Minas is one of the supporting points for those visiting the Park. There we find the best infrastructure for lodging and restaurants in the area of the Canastra Mountain Ridge.   The best time of the year for visitation is from April to October, because the weather is less rainy, facilitating the access to the local attractions and making the rides more pleasant.   There are many beautiful landscapes in the Park. The most sought one are the spring of the São Francisco River and the upper and lower areas of the Casca D’anta waterfall. Also part of the tour are the Rolinho Waterfall, the Garagem de Pedras, from where there is a full view of the Candidos valley; and the Babilônia Mountain Ridge.  The place also has archeological sites in its northernmost area. There we can see paintings in the caves, bone needles, stone axes, and primitive pottery.

Attractions
Waterfalls
Casca D’anta

With 186 meters (610.24 ft.) of height, it can be seen both from its upper part and for the lower part of the waterfall. The greatest attractions of the place are the delicious pools formed in its upper part, before reaching the fall.

dos Rolinhos
A 15-minute trail leads to the place. Its waters fall in the Lagoa Azul (Blue Pond), which has transparent waters, perfect for swimming. Besides being the most visited waterfall in the Park, it can also be seen from the top of the belvedere- a truly beautiful landscape.

Cândidos Farm and Garagem das Pedras
The Candidos Farm is located between the Canastra and Babilônia plateaus, from where it is possible to see the beautiful landscape created by the mountains.

Curral de Pedras (Stone Corral)
Those are ruins of an old farm, all made in stone, where it is possible to see the remains in stone of the old cattle corrals. The spring of the São Francisco River is located at only 6 km (3.73 mi.) from there, following the main road.

Spring of the São Francisco River
The access to the place can be gained by the São Roque de Minas entrance, the main entrance of the Park. After light walk of 6 km (3.73 mi.) along the main road, we see a small ciliary forest, where the spring is located.

Serra Brava Tower
It is the highest peak of the Park, with 1.480 meters (4,855.64 ft.) of altitude. It can be seen from the main road, in the area of the Garagem de Pedras.

Casca D’anta Trail
The most famous trail of the Park takes the visitors to the top of the homonymous waterfall. After covering an ascent of 4 km (2.49 mi.), which is normally covered in two hours, tourists reach the area. From the highest parts of the trail visitors have a beautiful view of the massifs of the Canastra and Babilônia Mountains Ridges. The way back to the starting point – the Casca d'Anta entrance – is done in a descent, normally lasting only one hour.

Babilônia Mountain Ridge
That mountain ridge is the natural water divisor of basins of the São Francisco and Paraná Rivers. The place abounds with waterfalls of transparent waters and trails. From the top of it, it is possible to see the Canastra Mountain Ridge. It is possible to cover the trail on foot, by horse, or on a 4WD vehicle.
