Canavieiras

Canavieiras is an ecological space located along the Cacao Coast, in the south of the state of Bahia. It is comprised of seven marine islands. Specialized publications point to Canavieiras as being the largest natural fishing hole for snook – a noble fish – in Brazil. The city is bathed by the Pardo River. It has wide streets and historical site from the beginning of the century built in pleasant and colorful architecture. The island of Atalaia, located in front of the city, has 14 km of continuous beach, coconut trees and mangrove areas that are home to herons, parrots, parakeets and swallows, maintaining the food chain cycle of several marine and fluvial species. Ever present nature provides tourist and ecological activity, permitting long bicycle rides through wild trails, untouched beaches and much swimming in rivers and the sea.

Events
Royal Charlotte Tournament
This is part of the Bahia Billfish Championship that chooses the grand winner in sport and ocean fishing in the state. It is comprised of four phases, two held in Salvador and the other two in Canavieiras. The championship reinforces ecologically correct fishing since the participants must release all marlins that are under the permitted weight. The tournament also has great social importance. In a general sense, the amount received from the registrations is converted into benefits for the community. During the championship, the participants face the majestic and coveted blue marlin on the high seas. This large billfish appears this time of year at the Royal Charlotte Bank, a submerged platform located 30 miles from the Pardo River sand bar. The tournament is held in the months of November thru January. For more information, call: +55 (71) 240-1831 and +55 (71) 9961-3628.

National Crab Festival
This is great event that mobilizes the entire city. It is held annually during the first fifteen days of September.

Attractions
Fishing
The billfish season goes from October to the beginning of March. Three to five blue marlins are normally sighted everyday until mid-February. The following month the numbers drop considerably, however the size increases. 80% of all blue marlins normally weigh between 150 and 300 kg, however it is not unusual to come across fish over 350 kg. Fights with white marlin and sailfish (fish that normally weigh more than 45 kg) are frequent.

Royal Charlotte Bank
Considered to be one of the three best fishing holes in the world, the Royal Charlotte Bank is a submerged platform that stretches along 50 miles of coast and causes an extensive reflux of the ocean current in its northern slope. This phenomenon attracts enormous concentrations of bait, and consequently, large species of fish.
