Barcelos was the first capital of Amazonas State – until 1758. It is a city surrounded by water, and one of its main attractions is sport fishing. It also stands out in the national production and exportation of ornamental fish. Due to the great quantity of water surrounding the city, its vegetation has plenty of natural orchids and bromeliads.
Barcelos has an area of 122,496 km², giving it the title of the largest township in territory in Brazil, and second largest in the world, losing only to Kiev, in Rússia.
The city has enormous tourism potential and offers various ecological tours. A large part of Jau National Park, Serra do Araçá State Park and Mariuá Environmental Protection Area – with more than 1400 islands and considered the largest fluvial archipelago in the world - are located in its territory.
In the middle of the year, around June or July, there are the folklore festivals, where the boi-bumbá and square dancing are the main attractions. And in the summer, when the river water recedes, the city offers beaches of rare beauty to the local community and the visitors.
