Xingó Canyon

Landscape, rocky formations, crystal clear waters, ecological trails, Caatinga Theme Park, exuberant vegetation and diversified fauna and flora: this is Xingó, located in Canindé do São Francisco – on the bank of the extensive and famous river by the same name.

To navigate between the rocks of this gigantic cliff embedded in the middle of Sergipe”s Alto Sertão is unforgettable. There are imposing valleys forming a 50 m high canyon, surrounding a lake that, in certain points, reaches 190m deep. Nests of herons and fluvial islands complete the spectacle.

The rocks guard traces of the area”s first inhabitants who lived there more than 8,000 years ago. There are also traces of Lampião”s stay there with his gang of outlaws in less remote times. Angico trail, in Poço Redondo, leads to the cavern by the same name, where Lampião, Maria Bonita and nine other outlaws lost their lives.

Located in the city of Canindé do São Francisco, 213 km (132 miles) from Aracaju, Xingó Canyon is one of the most famous rocky formations in the area, beautifying the dry Northeastern backwoods landscape.

It is hot all year, but the strong wind blowing from December to January provides a very comfortable temperature. Between May and August, it rains frequently.

Attractions
Tour through Xingó Canyon
The construction of the Xingó Hydroelectric Plant dam created a 65 km (40 mile) long water reservoir right in the middle of Northeastern semi-arid backwoods. The one time São Francisco River rapids gave way to calm and navigable waters, providing unforgettable tours in catamarans (raft), boats or schooners through a maze of beautiful 60 million old rocky formations, inspiring respect and admiration from those having the privilege to see them.

Catamaran Tour
It lasts 3 hours and starts on Dique II, following the river natural bed and passing by Lake Justino, the name of a local man whose ranch was flooded by the dam flooding. It was at this site that archeologists removed several pieces dated from approximately nine thousand years ago. Today these pieces can be admired at MAX – Xingo Archeological Museum, in Canindé do São Francisco.

Carved Grotto
Crossing São José Lake, the embarkation reaches Carved Grotto, which received its name because the sandstone rock walls seem to have been carved by hand. The embarkation stops here for bathing and diving. Take a moment to sit on the moor and enjoy nature”s blessings. Use your imagination to find the most incredible forms on the gigantic sandstone walls. There is also a small sanctuary here, a natural niche with the image of Saint Francis.

During the trip, there are several rocky formations that call attention for their extreme beauty. Among them there is Eagle Stone, whose top has the shape of an eagle”s head; Monkey Hill, which used to be the habitat for capuchin monkeys before the reservoir flooding; Japanese Stone, a beautiful rocky formation resembling the face of an oriental; the Crossbearer, which looks like a man on a horse; among many others.

Xingó Archeological Museum
It displays objects, panels with cave pictures, fragments of ceramic and burial urns found in the area. It also has an arts and crafts store.

Xingó Hydroelectric Plant
There are guided visits through the Plant”s installations, exhibiting the dam”s model, videos and photographs. The tour lasts 40 minutes and it is accessed by the road to the township of Piranhas.

New World Archeological Site
It has seven easy and guided trails in the middle of caatinga vegetation, passing by sandstone formations and cave pictures. Access is through the road to Paulo Afonso and the visit must be scheduled in advance.

Township of Piranhas
A historic city founded in the 19th Century, Piranhas is located on the other side of the river and serves as a border between the States of Sergipe and Alagoas. One of the local attractions is the belvedere, where it is possible to see the São Francisco River”s beautiful canyons. It is accessed by the road leading to the Xingo Hydroelectric Plant.

Backwoods Museum
Dedicated to the memory of the backwoods man, the museum displays objects, photos, and typical apparel used by them, including the clothing of the most famous outlaw the area has ever seen, Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, Lampião, and clothing from his gang of men.

Angico Grotto
The tour starts in Piranhas, with visits to the Backwoods Museum, and continues on to Angico Grotto, where the outlaw Lampião lost his life. It lasts 4 hours, but it is necessary to schedule it in advance in order to form a group. They depart from Xingo Park Hotel.
