Timbó

Known as Pérola do Vale – for its beauty, natural beauty, and the quality of life of the people – Timbó was classified by the UN (United Nations) as the 10th Brazilian city with the highest human development index. In 2002, it received Embratur’s national Golden seal, in highlight of its Municipal Tourism Plan.

Located in the east of the State of Santa Catarina, it is full of attractions – specially for lovers of nature, ecotourism and adventure tourism. It is considered as one of the best places in the country for rafting, on the Itajaí-Açu river. There is also and abundance of tours and trails through the forests, besides marvelous waterfalls.

Timbó represents the center of the Itajaí Valley, or European Valley, for having the best infrastructure of the region for the reception of visitors. The valley is a agglomerate of small and prosperous cities that up until today keep the traits and traditions of their European colonizers.

Vale do Itajaí or European Valley
To visit the Itajaí valley is like visiting Europe. From its architecture, culinary, customs, the inhabitants, everything reminds of the “old world” and more precisely, Germany, country from where most of the colonizers came from in the 19th century. There are over 520 thousand privileged inhabitants with one of the best standards of living in Brazil.

In addition to its traditions, the European Valley, as it is more commonly known, stands out for its prosperous economy. It is one of the richest regions not only n the State of Santa Catarina but in the country as well. It is quite industrialized, with 4,700 industries, and considered as the largest textile pole of Latin America.

The beautiful scenery of natural beauty deserves highlight, guaranteeing nature lovers many options: mountains, waterfalls, caves, and rivers with strong currents, ecological trails, and much more.

The climate is temperate, with maximum of 40ºC and minimum of -3ºC. The annual mean temperature if of 21ºC. The rains vary according to the season of the year, predominating between December and March. They occur occasionally, during the spring, from September to the end of the year.

How to get there
By Road: three highways lead to Timbó: BR-116, BR-101 and BR-470. The other cities, inserted in the circuit of Itajaí Valley, are all very close to one another and the same roads can reach most of them.

Attractions
Rafting in River Itajaí-Açu
Rafting, famous among its adepts. There are two downstream stretches of difficulty levels varying along the course: the basic, in the city of Apiúna, of 1.5 km. It takes 2h30 to cover the 11 Class III river rapids there. There is a stop in the middle of the way for a bath under the Santa Luzia waterfall, very beautiful and refreshing. The radical stretch, in the city of Ibirama, requires a little more experience from the visitor. The course is of 8 km and lasting 2 hr, with strong and continuous currents, Class IV.

Morro Azul (Freymund Germer Ecological Park)
Stays at 18 km from the center and is the highest point of Timbó, with 758 m altitude. The top is equipped with a ramp for paragliding, camping structure and a marvelous view. On the way, between sinuous roads, there are many typical houses, forming a nice landscape.

Botanical garden
Located in the center of town, it has a large green area with lakes, camping area, barbecue grills, restaurants and ecological trails. An excellent outing for the kids.

Morro Arapongas
It is the official observatory of the city, 6 km from the center, of difficult access. It mostly visited by people who like adventure and paragliding sports lovers.

River Benedito Dam
Built in 1880 by German immigrants, it is in the center of Timbó. Access is through Oscar Bremer Square – where one can find the leafy, centenary fig tree.

Music Museum – Hammermeister Hall
Exposes musical instruments of five centuries ago in the Ballroom, built in the 1900’s. Located at Rua Edmundo Bell, s/n, Rodovia SC-477, km 5, it opens from Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 11:30 AM, and 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, visits only occur by appointment.

Immigrant Museum
The Immigrant Museum is a place where one can contemplate the local memory, history and identity through exhibitions that represent the way of living of the ancestors. The museum stays at Avenida Getúlio Vargas, Bairro Centro.

Pomerode
Considered the most German city in Brazil. It stands out from its production of porcelain, the streets and homes decorated with beautiful gardens, the typical food and architecture. In January, the Pomeranian Feast, a confraternity that lasts many days, with bands, dances, confectioneries, stuffed drake , much beer and joy.

Rio do Sul
Important city of Alto Vale to Itajái, with a valorous cultural heritage, museums and churches that tell a little of the region’s history. It also has waterfall ideal for ecotourism.

Indaial
It is the city of flowers and plants. It has a significant architectural heritage, which goes from Fachwerk houses (German culture mark), to more modern, contemporaneous buildings. It owns extremely beautiful landscapes, typically European, with springs and gardens.

Rio dos Cedros
It is the paradise of lakes. It is situated in an altitude that varies from 75 to 1,020 m. Lake Rio Bonito is 600 m high and has 9 km. Pinhal Lake is 14 km long and 800 m high.

Nova Trento
Small city close to Brusque, it is the land of Amábile Lúcia Visintainer, Madre Paulina, sanctified in 1991. It has a sanctuary that receives millions of pilgrims every year. It is known as the capital of religious tourism in the State of Santa Catarina. Annually, always in the month of August, is held the Encanto Trentino feast – a large celebration with the best Italian kitchen tradition.

Brusque
Brusque is one of the most important textile poles of Brazil, with many industries, large stores and many shopping malls with busy commerce. You can find confections for bed, table and bathing, jersey, fabrics, lingerie, everything for very accessible prices. This attracts thousands of tourists and buyers from all corners, including Mercosur countries.

Botuverá
Famous for the Botuverá Caverns. With 580 m long, it has eight galleries with heights that vary between 20 and 50 m. The city is known as the limestone capital of the state.

Ibirama
German colonization land, Ibirama has beautiful landscapes for the practice of ecotourism. There, the tourist finds different options for the practice of radical sports such as rafting, paragliding, canyoning and ecological treks in the middle of waterfalls and local vegetation.

Apiúna
Rich in natural beauty, the city has areas untouched by man. It is one of the most suitable places for ecotourism in the Itajái Valley. Tourists can go down the waterfalls by boat, practice rappel in its over 100 waterfalls, finding it their ideal destination.

Presidente Getúlio
Home of a joyful and hospitable people, the city of Presidente Getúlio preserves the European cultural traits that were installed into the city during its foundation. It stands out nationally for the quality of living of its inhabitants and its natural beauties. It is surrounded by mountains filled with waterfalls, cascades and rivers, being suitable for adventure tourism. Rappel and canyoning can be practiced at “Vale das Cachoeiras”.

Rodeio
Founded by Italian immigrants of Tirol Trentino, in the north of Italy, it conserves till today the traditions of the colonizers. It annually holds the La Sagra feast – typically Italian – always in September.

Gaspar
City of German immigration, Gaspar offers to its visitors the “Route of Waters”, with many aquatic parks and paid fishing ponds. The religious aspect is quite marking. The Head Church São Pedro Apóstolo, with its 115 steps, glass works, cave and magnificent decoration, is a strong symbol of the city.

Cheese
It is possible to find cheese prepared with Italian recipes passed on from generation to generation for many years.

Community Market
Regional handcraft, conserved food, sausages, cheese and cucas (a German kind of cake).
