Parque Nacional do Itatiaia

The Itatiaia National Park is located on the border of the States of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. It belongs to the Rio townships of Itatiaia and Resende, and the Minas townships of Itamonte, Alagoa and Bocaina de Minas. It is the oldest national park in Brazil. Its low part is about 750 m (2460 ft) high, and it is covered with Atlantic Forest with century-old trees. The high part has a mountainous relief with cliffs and hillsides. The undulated terrain favors the existence of several waterfalls thus ensuring great adventure to visitors that includes mountain climbing and trekking through the brush. The Park can be visited from 8AM to 5PM. The best time of year to get to know the lower part of the Park (located in the township of Itatiaia) is between the months of October and February. However, the best period to get to know the plateau is from May to August, when it is drier.

Waterfalls

Itaporani Waterfall
The Campo Belo River falls are in the middle of virgin woods with heights ranging from 10 m (33 ft) to 12 m (39 ft). After following a short trail, you reach the site where it is possible to take a shower in the falls or to bathe in the lake formed by the falling waters.

Véu de Noiva Waterfalls
After walking 450 m (1475 ft) along the trail that borders the Maromba River, you arrive at the 40 m (131 ft) high waterfall. Its waters are crystal clear and extremely cold. It is one of the Park’s greeting cards.

Poranga Waterfalls
Poranga means “beauty” in Tupi, indicating what the visitor can expect to find. It is formed by a 10 m (33 ft) high fall with a large volume of water creating a natural pool, 30 m (98 ft) in diameter, which is excellent for bathing.

Maromba Falls and Pool
This large natural pool formed by the Maromba River is located at an altitude of 1100 m (3610 ft), and is excellent for bathing.

Lago Azul

Hills and Trails

Mirante do Último Adeus (Last Goodbye Lookout)
This rocky formation is 810 m (2660 ft) high from which a beautiful panoramic view of the Park and the Funil Dam can be seen. It is 2 km (1.25 mi) from the gate.

Rebouças Shelter
This serves as a base for walks to the high part of the Park. The site provides support for visitors and it is used by researchers, mountain climbers and military training.

Maciço das Prateleiras
It is formed by huge blocks of rock and stands 2548 m (8360 ft) high. After a 2 hour trail crossing high fields and climbing up rocky sections, one can appreciate the beautiful view of the Paraíba Valley – or the Escondido – under the clouds. An IBAMA accredited guide is obligatory.

Agulhas Negras Peak
It is one of the highest points in Brazil. Its 2787 m (9145 ft) can be reached over two phases. The first involves a moderate 1 hour walk to the base, starting from the Rebouças Shelter, followed by a more than 2 hour heavy climb to the top. It requires good physical conditioning and some experience to advance over sections where the use of a security rope is necessary. An IBAMA accredited guide is advisable.

Trilha dos Três Picos (Three Peaks Trail)
The 8 km (5 mi) steep climb leads to the Três Picos (Three Peaks) – formations with an average height of 1600 m (5250 ft). This walk permits the visitor to experience a little of two ecosystems that can be found in the Park: The Atlantic Forest and the Altitude Fields. The steep climb is rewarded by the bath in the Rio Bonito Waterfalls. From there, you can follow other very steep sections that are surrounded by beautiful views of the Paraíba Valley and the spurs of the Mantiqueira Mountains.

Aiuruoca Valley
Starting from the Rebouças Shelter, follow a moderate walk for 2 hours. Facing the State of Minas Gerais, the Valley has the ice-cold Aiuruoca Waterfall and Ovos da Galinha (Hen's Eggs) rock formation. Along the way, also enjoy the Asa do Hermes (Hermes Wing) and Pedra do Altar (Altar Stone) formations.
