Guaíra

Located in the west of the state of Paraná, the hospitable town of Guaíra offers the necessary infrastructure to receive tourists that, besides simply looking for relaxation, want to be in contact with nature and know a little more about the history of the local colonization.   There, visitors have the opportunity of admiring the contrast between the well-preserved buildings from the colonial period and the sophistication of the modern constructions of the present.   For those who like nature, Guaíra has a lot to offer. The town is located on the shores of the Paraná River and is considered the Gateway to the Pantanal Paranaense*. It forms a biodiversity corridor, with more than 200 islands, hundreds of species of birds, reptiles, and amphibians, besides 170 species of fish. There, the Ilha Grande National Park is a good leisure option.  In Guaíra, there are also the notorious fluvial excursions with options for amateur and professional fishing.  The area is rich in fish species, such as the dorado and the piapara**, attracting practisers of sport fishing from several parts of Brazil and the world.

In the Guaíra area, the humid subtropical mesothermic climate prevails, with hot summers, average temperature above 22°C (71.6 °F), and a tendency for rain concentration. The winters, on the other hand, have average lower temperatures below 18°C (64.4 °F) and some infrequent frosts. There is no definite dry season.

How to get there
By Air: the town has a small municipal airport, which receives small-sized aircrafts. It is located at Kilometer 15 of the BR-272 highway.
By Road: the main access ways to the town of Guaíra are the BR-163 and BR-272 highways.

Attractions
Ilha Grande National Park
The Park is formed by fluvial islands and islets and lays in the last stretch free from the damming up of the Paraná River. The predominant vegetation is the one typically found in swampy areas and floodable fields. Some species of the flora that is found there are fig trees, jequitibas, trumpet trees, orchids and plants of the pineapple (Brommeliaceae) family. As for the fauna, it is possible to see swamp deers (Blastocerus dichotomusthey), American alligators (Caiman latirostris), jaguars, great anteaters (Myrnecophaga tridactyla), among others.

Paraná River
It is the largest river of the hydrographic system of the Prata Basin. It also establishes the boundary between the states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul and the Republic of Paraguay, from the mouth of the Paranapanema River to Iguaçu Falls, in a stretch of 400km (248.55 mi.). Much of it is navigable, thus being a great option for tourism. In it, the fishing of species such as the dorado and the piapara* is greatly practiced. There are several islands in it, the largest ones being: Tucano, Pacu, Pavão, and Grande, which play an important role in the environmental balance.

Ayrton Senna Bridge in Guaíra
Stretching for 4km (2.49 mi.), that majestic work connects the town of Guaíra to the town of Mundo Novo, in Mato Grosso do Sul.
Guaíra Museum
The interesting collection is notorious for the specimens of animals that were captured in the area, for the indigenous art, and for the objects that bear witness to the passage of the Spanish and Portuguese explorers through that area.

The Stone Church of Nuestro Señor Del Perdón
A Spanish chapel that was built with stones brought from the Sete Quedas*. Its Argentinean stained glass windows prominently show the catechization of the Indians by the Jesuit priests.
* An area in which seven waterfalls could be seen. It was completely flooded by the waters of the Itaipú dam.

Cruzeiro of the Americas and Marinas Nautical Center
The Cruzeiro – a large Cross of stone – dates back to 1556 and is located near the Marinas Nautical Center, a village-shaped leisure area. Built in an area of 434,144.38 square yards, the Nautical Center offers infrastructure for several Cultural, sports and leisure activities, as well as seven pavilions for events, and a nautical base.

Father Pacífico’s Studio
A renowned plastic artist, that former Franciscan friar decided to devote his life to the defense of the flora and fauna, portraying the beauties of nature and of the indigenous culture in wooden sculptures.

Sete Quedas Cinema-Theater
Inaugurated in 1905, the building belonged to the Mate Laranjeira Company and was used for the scorching of the maté leaves. Today it is a well-equipped modern cultural space, projecting the local culture the all peoples.

Salto del Guayra

The town of Guaíra shares the international border with the town of Salto del Guayra, the Capital of the Department of Canindeyú, in Paraguay. The access to the Paraguayan town is made by ferryboat, and it is possible to visit the stores that sell foreign goods, as well as the local casino.
