Andaraí

The town of Andaraí is one of the main starting points for tours in the area of the Diamantina Plateau. Located on the shores of the Baiano River and at the hillsides of the Mountain Ridge of Sincorá, that town was one of the favorite places for prospectors during the local gold and diamond rushes. The beauty of the local architectural group, formed by big houses from the diamond prospecting phase, led into the town being listed as a landmark by the Instituto do Patrimônio histórico e Artístico Nacional - IPHAN (The Brazilian National Historical and Artistical Heritage Institute).   In Andaraí, everybody’s attention is drawn by the many ponds that form a flooded plain, where the stillness of the waters is a perfect refuge for the most beautiful species of fauna and flora of the area, such as alligators, tucunarés (fresh-water fish of the genus Cichlydae), and Victoria Regias (giant water lilies).   The rivers that cut the area of Andaraí form waterfalls and grottos that are perfect for those who love nature, action sports, and adventure tourism. Some must-go tours are: the Fumaça waterfall (Smoke Waterfall), with a fall of 380 meters (1,246.72 ft.) of fall, and the Encantada, França, Paus, Baiano, and Ferreira ponds. Hikes and bicycle rides for the trails show tourists incredible landscapes in the Diamantina Plateau.  The town’s charm, as well as the whole area’s beauty, also lies in the rusty cozy camping sites, lodges and hotels that are found there. Besides its natural and architectural beauties, Andaraí has a more than special attraction for tourists: the friendliness and hospitality of its inhabitants.

Attractions
Fumaça Waterfall (Smoke Waterfall)
The Cachoeira da Fumaça is one of the most visited places in the Diamantina Plateau. The reason is simple: it has a 380 meter (1,256.72 ft) fall, which makes it the second biggest waterfall in the world. Its name results from the image that can be seen when droplets are taken by the wind, forming a mist which resembles smoke and is seen in the whole fall. To get there, we have to cover the trail which passes by the sites of the first mines of the area, a place full of beauty and history. While on the trail, which is covered in approximately an hour and a half, it is possible to see the wondrous Rio Preto Mountain Ridge and the beauty of the Capão Valley. After the long hike the best thing to do is to dive in the refreshing crystal clear waters of the Fumaça fall.

Garapa and Roncador Rivers
In both those rivers we find rapids and crystal clear waterfalls. The only way to reach them is by using off-road vehicles. The total course from Andaraí is 18 km (11.18 mi.) long, passing by a trail that goes past old mining sites.
Ramalho and Três Barras Waterfalls
The course that leads into those waterfalls would be an unforgettable tour in itself. But those who visit the Ramalho waterfall are dazzled with its 80 m (262.47 ft.) of height. The access trail, crossing the bed of the river, is nearly 6 km (3.73 mi.) long. In that course it is possible to swim and to cool off in a host of wells and small waterfalls. As for the Três Barras fall, it is located at 3 km (1.86 mi.) from Andaraí, and it is formed by a sequence of three waterfalls, one right after the other. Must sees!

Azul Well and Paixão Grotto (Blue Well and Passion Grotto)
The transparency of the waters of the Azul Well, located inside a grotto, is a definite must-see for those who visit the town of Andaraí. The water is so clear that it is possible to see skeletons of prehistoric animals. In the place only surface diving is allowed. The other “piece of heaven” is the Paixão Grotto, rich in calcareous formations. It is 3 km (1.86 mi.) long, right in the middle of the caatinga*, surrounded by crooked twisted trees. The grotto is formed by interconnected corridors which lead to a wide central area, known as the "Conventions Lounge" (Salão de Convenções, in Portuguese).

* Caatinga is the name given to large areas of the interior of the northeastern part of Brazil. The name "Caatinga" is a Tupi word meaning "white forest" or "white vegetation" (kaa = forest, vegetation, tínga = white). The Caatinga has a semi-arid climate with average annual temperatures around 28 °C (82.4 °F). The area has a very hot and dry winter and a hot and rainy summer. The rivers of the Caatinga only run during rainy summers.
