Lages

An important town in the state of Santa Catarina, Lages is important for being a university center in the area and for having been part of the route of the Tropeiros (drivers of herbs) during the times of the great battles fought in the South of Brazil. Its colonization – made by Italians, Portuguese, Spanish and Germans – has left their traits everywhere in that charming town in the mountains. The climate is predominantly cold, which, combined with the buildings of magnificent facades from the beginning of the twentieth century, grants to its streets a unique romantic atmosphere.   The wealth of the architectural group of Lages is also evident in its several monuments, onstuídos paying homage to those who made the local history, as in the Monument to the Immigrants and in the Monument to the Tropeiro.   Lages owes the title of “national capital of the rural tourism ” to the countless natural attractions and, also, to the many farm hotels found there. Most of them are managed by the farmers' families, who escort the visitors while they take part in the most traditional activities of the country men, such as the rural errands, the taming of animals, the cavalcades, and the fishing. Those who stay in those farms can also take part in the cozy get-together around the bonfire, where stories are told while people drink the traditional chimarrão (a type of maté, typical of the South American pampas). On many farms there are rustic rooms, natural swimming pools, museums and libraries with historical documents and objects. At mealtimes, the ringing of the bells warns guests that it is time to taste the delicacies of the regional cuisine.   In the months of winter the town becomes even more attractive, with the constants frosts and snowstorms that fall on the mountains. In the month of June there is the traditional Piñon Festival, which attracts more than 300 thousand tourists to the town. During the event, visitors can see typical dances, people wearing traditional clothing, and the contagious rhythm and the delicacies of the local cuisine make it a feast to the senses.  For those who enjoy being in contact with the nature, Lages offers a wide Ecological Park, with more than eight thousand Araucaria trees, which is commercially explored in the extraction of the piñon, the seed of the pine tree. The area offers many relaxing tours, mainly around the Salto (fall) of the Cachoeiras River, formed by a large lake, a dam, a waterfall, and a green area.
