Acre

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the territory of Acre belonged to Bolivia. Thanks to diplomatic negotiations made by Baron of Rio Branco, the area was in 1904 attached to the national territory. Attracted by the rubber production, pioneers from the Northeast started the state land occupation, creating the main cities of the region.

Rubber also attracts many tourists, who venture on tours to rubber plantations and have contact with the extraction process of latex – the raw material for rubber production. The reserves are very close to the capital of the state: the City of Rio Branco.

Besides the plantations, the State of Acre has its urban area attractions. In the capital, the main attractions are: Cathedral of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, a construction of 1959 influenced by the Roman basilicas; the Small Church of Iron, a chapel made of iron plates; and Rio Branco Palace, which reminds of a Greek temple, with its Ionic columns.

In the City of Plácido de Castro, 97 km from Rio Branco, wild river beaches and an ecological park with over 100 species of tropical flora are waiting for the tourists. A canoe ride on Abunã River to watch the pink boutos (river dolphins) is another program in the region that the visitor can’t miss.

In Acre, the visitor should also go to Juruá Valley. It’s a sanctuary almost at the border between Brazil and Peru surrounded by narrow waterways, river beaches of clear and fine sand and large areas of preserved forest. The tourists can also go fishing during boat rides on rivers of the region.

The contact with the nature, preserved in its most primitive state: that’s what visiting the State of Acre is like. Come see it, and become a fan.
