Maranhão

Maranhão State carries strong marks from the Country´s colonial and imperial past. Also there is a coast full of enjoyable beaches and a valuable historic patrimony, offering countless touring options for its visitors.

The capital, São Luís – granted Heritage of Humanity by Unesco – still preserves the narrow streets and houses with tile façades, making an architectural complex of approximately three thousand buildings erected between the 17th and 19th centuries.

On a tour around the capital and other small cities in the State, such as Alcântara – granted heritage by the National Historic Heritage – it is possible to recreate the history of those lands once inhabited by the tupinambá indians. Besides the architectural attractions, the State of Maranhão also reserves places of rare beauty. Within them are the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park; the delta of the Parnaíba River; the region of Carolina; and the reefs of Parcel de Manoel Luís, largest coral reef in South America and an excellent place for diving.

This State is also known as the land of the palm trees, as the various species of this tree provide its major source of income. The most important of them, from an economic point of view, is the babassu. The agribusiness, the aluminium and alumina transformation industries, and the food and timber industries complement the state economy.

Contrary to the majority of the states from the Northeastern Region, the State of Maranhão doesn´t suffer with droughts. Its territory is washed by an extensive network of perennial rivers, and the rainy season is quite regular. This network is formed by the Parnaíba river, the biggest of all; Gurupi; Grajaú; and Tocantins, running in the South, drawing the border with the State of Tocantins.

Beautiful beaches, history and much culture are spread throughout Maranhão State. Come, and become a fan!
