Link between the Brazilian Amazon and Mid-West, Rondonia developed its tourist and economic potential since 1980, when became State and was no longer a territory.
The development of agriculture and coffee production –the state’s main economic activities- began with the implementation of the Project Norwest Center, carried out by the Federal Government, which promoted the asphalt paving of the highway Porto Velho-Cuiabá attracting migrations from the south and mid-south of the country.
A super-project planned by American and English engineers, the Railroad Madeira-Mamoré began construction in 1907 and was finished in 1912. The railroad was put out of action for showing a deficit, and only a 7-km section was kept in use for tourist excursions. Its heritage was preserved in the Railroad Museum, which also tells the story of the peak of rubber exploitation in the state – which used to have plenty of rubber plantations.
Together with the railroad, Porto Velho was born, capital of the state and then territory of Rondonia. For those who enjoy adventure, 18 km away from there is Teotonio Waterfall, with rough waters contrasting with the tranquility of Teotonio, a fishermen village in the surroundings.
The state of Rondonia shows a great tourist potential. Its woods, rivers, waterfalls, and its fish-based cookery are some of its local attractions. The Madeira River is the biggest affluent at the right side of the Amazon, passing by the city of Porto Velho.
A journey through its waters is a real adventure within the Amazon Forest, where you may observe numerous centennial trees, exotic birds and thrilling rapids. By means of the Madeira River you reach Lago do Cuniã, a biological reservation with a natural fresh-water fish farm, which also features flock of birds in flight. An outstanding sight. The state contains 17 indigenous areas, in which 23 peoples live.
Among numerous attractions together with nature, pleasant boat journeys by the Amazon Forest are only one of the itineraries that make the state of Rondonia a very special destination. Come here and enjoy!
