The state of Santa Catarina offers a territory of contrasts: hills against the littoral of beautiful beaches, bays, coves and dozens of islands; architecture-wise many districts maintain the construction typical from colonization times; whereas the capital city, Florianópolis, is a city of modern and sophisticated buildings marked by a strong presence of young people, nautical sports and surf championships.   

Its colonization began in the littoral, with the arrival of the Portuguese. Then came the Italians, which occupied mainly the South and West of the state. Also known as a part of Europe embedded in the south of Brazil, the state of Santa Catarina shows one of Brazil’s best economic development indexes, based on a diversified industrial production. The agriculture production occupies 25% of the territory. It also concentrates some of the country’s largest frozen-meat storage plants, such as Sadia, in Concordia; Perdigão, in Videira; and Chapecó, in the city of the same name. Industries of ceramics and porcelain, located mostly in the south of the state, export their products to more than 60 countries, the largest one being Cecrisa. The cities of Tubarão, Criciúma and neighboring districts based their economy on the extraction of ores, particularly coal.
