The caves and caverns have forever fascinated mankind. Their geological formations seduce the eye for their diversity, complexity and time invested by nature in forming them – million of years to acquire the shapes we know today. Cave tourism – or espeleotourism – specifically consists of exploring and knowing the inside of these fantastic formations.

Like everywhere else in the world, the interest in cave tourism in Brazil has grown quite a lot. This is due to the technical enhancements developed at the conservation units of the country over the years. They are about 2,800 registered caves, according to the Brazilian Cave Tourism Society, although, the institution acknowledges that the number is quite higher. From this total, 53 are considered as tourist sites.

In the Northeast, two large National Parks provide visits into the caves and caverns: The one of Chapada Diamantina, in the State of Bahia; and of Serra da Capivara, in the state of Piauí – the latter of which was entered into Unesco’s list of Humanity’s Cultural Heritage Protectorates. In addition, at the border between Bahia and Goiás states, one can visit one of the most important cavern sites of Brazil; Terra Ronca State Park – a must-visit location.

In the Mid-West of Brazil there are also good caves and caverns to visit. In the State of Mato Grosso, it is worth visiting the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Bonito city is the attraction, holding the most famous caverns of São Miguel, and of Lago Azul.

In the Southeast Region, the State of Minas Gerais reserves nice saunters for cave tourists. In the city of Cordisburgo, do not forget to go to Maquiné; in Sete Lagoas, the Reo do Mato Cavern; and in Lagoa Santa, the Lapinha Cavern.

The State of São Paulo also offers an excellent option: Alto Ribeira State Park – PETAR. There are four visitation centers filled with caverns and caves to be explored – always accompanied by a specialized guide. One can find very nice surprises even in the most urban of all National Parks of Brazil, Tijuca Park, in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
