The colonisation of the State of Piauí had intense participation of the herdsmen coming from neighbouring states such as Maranhão and Bahia on the 17th century, seeking new pastures for their herds. From that emerged what the piauienses fondly call the “leather civilisation”.
The capital, Teresina, is the only northeastern capital that isn´t located by the seaside. This is explained by the way in which the occupation of Piauí State took place, from the inland to the coast – differently from all the other States in the Region.
Piauí State is full of great contrasts. While its economy is not placed within the most vigorous in the Country, its territory encompasses a historic treasure of priceless value, the Serra da Capivara National Park. The most important archeologic site in Brazil and in all of the Americas is located there. Signals indicate that it was on that region, a prehistoric scenery in the remote countryside, that the american man appeared, much earlier than it was thought.
Although the coast extends for only 66km, Piauí State comprises a privileged ecosystem, formed by countless islands, lagoons, brooks and fine sand beaches, surrounded by dunes and coconut trees. Besides, there is a wealth of natural beauties, such as the Parnaíba Delta, the only one in open seas in all of the three Americas; and the Sete Cidades National Park, where prehistoric paintings in caves and rocky formations are scattered through a large preserved area, dating at least 400 million years.
The scrub savanna vegetation, allied to the predominant semi-arid climate, favours the subsistence agriculture, the extensive cattle raising in large estates and the extraction of palm species such as the carnauba wax palm and the babassu. Piauí State is practically destitute of industries.
Natural beauties, allied to the amazing archeologic wealth, make the Piauí State wonders. Come, and become a fan!
