In Porto Alegre

The chimarrão (maté tea similar to Paraguayan tea), which is always present in the daily lives of Porto Alegre’s inhabitants, is an heritage from at least three indigenous people of Tupi-Guarani origin. The Guaranis, the Pampeans, and the Kaingangs, former inhabitants of the Brazilian Southern region, used to mix ground maté leaves with boiling water, in an attempt to be protected by the god, Tupan. Nowadays, the drink is part of gaucho traditions and is present in the lives of people throughout the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
