Located in the municipality of Barcelos, in the State of Amazonas, the Archipelago of Mariuá is the biggest fluvial archipelago of Brazil and encompasses a set of Amazonian blackwater ecosystems, including rivers, flooded forests and swamps. It is composed of more than 1,400 islands, about 140 km long and 20 km wide.

With rich flora and fauna, the Archipelago integrates the Jaú National Park and the State Park of Serra do Aracá. The marine life of the region has about 700 species of fish, some of them being ornamental, but the largest population is composed of pink dolphins.

The place also houses about 30 riverside and indigenous communities, having rich sociocultural diversity. There is an intense interdependence of these populations in relation to the natural resources of the Archipelago.
