Few places can unite nature and history with so much balance as the Anchieta Island in Ubatuba, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Anchieta Island is the largest island of the coast of São Paulo. Its crystal clear waters are full of shoals of tainhas (mullets), sardines, flying fish and sea turtles.

Due to the rich natural beauty of the place, schooner rides are quite common and last for about 1 hour. The island has one of the best night diving spots, the Ilhote Sul, and is part of the preservation area of the Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta, with typical vegetation of the Atlantic forest.

Populated by Indians until the 19th century, Anchieta used to hold a State prison in 1902. The prison was shut down in early 1950, after many riots, but its ruins are there until today, bringing a touch of history to anyone who visits. The ruins are also accessible through trails, that must be made with accredited monitors that can be found as soon as you arrive on site.
