Established on June 13, 1808, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden was created to improve the adaptation of saplings and seeds brought from abroad to Brazilian weather conditions. The Garden’s trademark are the Imperial palm trees, the first of which was planted by D. João VI in 1809.
The Garden is one of the most important botanical research centers around the world, housing some of the rarest plant species from Brazil and other countries.
The Botanical Garden features approximately 6,500 different species spread across 54 hectares, both outdoors and in greenhouses. The Garden also features Brazil’s most complete botanical library.
In addition to its importance towards the preservation of biodiversity, the Garden is a great leisure option for both children and adults. Listed as a historical landmark by the Brazilian National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), the Garden was also designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
Do not climb trees or touch thorny plants, such as cacti.
Avoid eating plants and fruits.
Strong winds may occur and you may need to evacuate the Garden.

Take the subway line 1 or 2, get off at the Botafogo station, exit the station and take the Metrô na Superfície [Surface Subway] bus towards Gávea. Get off at the Jardim Botânico station and enter the Garden through the gate at Rua Pacheco Leão, 101. Check out the Subway map.
In addition to the bicycle racks at the Garden, there are Bike Rio bicycle rental service stations at Rua Pacheco Leão nº 320 and nº 915, as well as Praça Santos Dumont nº 40.
