Referred to as "Palácio de Tábuas" (Plank Palace) due to its simple architecture, the Catetinho was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built in 1956, in only ten days. The Catetinho was supposed to be President Juscelino Kubitschek’s temporary residence during Brasilia’s construction, until the Palácio da Alvorada was ready.

The name refers to the official residence of the President, at the time, the Palácio do Catete, in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil’s current capital.

The two story wooden building protected in 1959 by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) is well preserved and open to visitation.

Rooms such as the presidential suite, the dispatch room, the guest room and the dining room display original and authentic 1950’s decor as well as objects of that decade.

After visiting the Museum, be sure to go to the Olho d ' Água, the water spring that inspired songwriters Vinícius de Moraes’ and Tom Jobim’s famous bossa nova song "Água de Beber".
