Also known as Catedral da Sé de Mariana, the Basilica is one of the most important temples of the State and is heritage listed by the National Historical and Artistic Institute (Iphan). Built in the early 18th century, it is a work of baroque artists José Pereira Arouca and Manuel Francisco Lisboa - Aleijadinho's father.

Outside, the architecture is simple and gives priority to straight lines with few details. At the entrance, you will see the prettiest windscreen of Minas Gerais, work of Antônio Francisco Lisboa - Aleijadinho, one of Brasil's most important artists. It’s possible to see the face of Jesus Christ on the work.

Inside the Cathedral, there is a painting depicting the baptism of Christ, by Master Ataíde, a great painter born in Mariana. The high altar is worked in the Portuguese national style and its finishing carry an image of our Lady of Assumption wearing the gold-embroidered robe.

The Church also has an organ from 1701, built by the german Arp Schnitger, one of the largest builders of all time.
