The first cableway installed in Brasil, the Pão de Açúcar cableway is one of Rio’s trademarks.
Designed by Brazilian engineer Augusto Ferreira Ramos, the Pão de Açúcar cableway celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012. The first cableway installed in Brasil and third around the world, it is one of the most important hallmarks of Rio de Janeiro and one of the city’s world-famous trademarks.
The cableway ride offers marvelous sceneries in a panoramic view. From the cableway carts, visitors can see the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, majestic mountain ranges, such as the Pedra da Gávea, Corcovado and Dedo de Deus, Serra do Mar. The ascent starts at Vermelha Beach, rises up to the Urca Hilltop, and ends at the top of Pão de Açúcar, at a height of 396 meters.
The Pão de Açúcar mountain range were used as inspiration to create the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games brand and were even used as a set for a James Bond movie in 1979. Fun fact: tightrope walkers such as Steven McPeak, from the U.S., and Germany’s Falko Traber have already walked over the cableway cables in 1977 and 2007, respectively.
Key information and tips
The tickets purchased at the ticket office are only valid for the same purchase day. However, you can also buy tickets online at the cable car website with the possibility of choosing the visit date.
From Praia Vermelha, you can reach the base of Morro da Urca, the first stop of the cable car going to the Sugarloaf. The trail is very steep and starts at the Claudio Coutinho track (left side of whom is facing the sea). The walk lasts around 40 minutes.
