Part of the history of Cabo Frio in the State of Rio de Janeiro, can be observed on the buildings around the city. São Mateus Fort is on the far left of Forte Beach.
Built strategically there in the sixteenth century, the Fort played an important role during the Portuguese occupation in the city. It was possible to watch the open sea from where the Spanish and Dutch ships would come.
Built with stones and lime, it has 7 cannons and soldiers division. It has been protected by the Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) and its ruins are open to visit.
From the lookout at the top of this construction you get a splendid view of all the coast, the turquoise wonderful sea and the island of the Japanese. Carry the camera with you to take pictures of one of the best views in the region.
To enjoy the view go in a sunny day.
Protect yourself from the rays of the sun. Drink plenty of water.
Beware of the stones on the way to the Fort. Very slippery.
