Among the ecological parks of Brasil, the National Park of Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, is one of the most beautiful. With an area of 152,000 hectares, it was opened in 1985 with the aim of preserving the local nature, and covers the municipalities of Lençóis, Iraquara, Palmeiras, Mucugê, Ibicoara, Andaraí and Morro do Chapéu.

The Park has rugged relief and its vegetation is quite diversified: typical species of the Atlantic forest share space with creeping plants of the cerrado [Brazilian savannah], rupestrian fields and caatinga [dry forest]. The fauna is very rich: the site is home to jaguars, ocelots, deers and other animals.

The forms of the relief allow the formation of caves and caverns, such as the Torrinha and Pratinha which, along with others, form one of the largest underground trails across the country. The trails are good for trekking and the mountains, great for rock climbing. The mountain ranges reach up to 1700 meters. The Chapada Diamantina region houses the Cachoeira da Fumaça [Smoke Waterfall], the second highest of Brasil, with 380 meters.
