Rio de Janeiro’s landmark, the statue of Jesus Christ is located at the peak of Corcovado mountain and is the world’s biggest Art Deco sculpture.
Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Christ the Redeemer is a majestic statue at the Corcovado Hilltop.
The monument represents the faith and compassion of cariocas (as those born in Rio are nicknamed) and it is a definite must-see for anyone visiting Rio.
From the top – 710 meters above sea level –, visitors enjoy one of the most astonishing views of the Wonderful City, including Pão de Açúcar, the Guanabara Bay, the Botafogo Coast, and the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.
The world’s largest art deco statue raised 38 meters up into the skies, Christ the Redeemer is located in the Tijuca National Park area, which features other equally beautiful sights, such as Pedra da Gávea and the Chinese View.
Sculpted in soapstone, the monument took five years to be built and was inaugurated in 1931.
Key information and tips
Avoid using any other means of transportation to reach Corcovado.
The Corcovado Train trips must be scheduled, the best thing to do is to buy the anticipated tickets online, on the mobile app or at the sales points.
The Corcovado Train box office does not sell tickets for rides for the same day. The box office is for exchanging the vouchers previously purchased on the Internet, mobile app or authorized sales points only.
Avoid using other means of transportation to get to Corcovado. The vans that cover the route to the monument are identified as such. Should you prefer to get a taxi, the private vehicles are only allowed to go as far as Estrada das Paineiras, from there the visitors must board on one of the special vans to travel the rest of the way. There is no established price for taxi fares, so insist that the divers use the taximeter. In the event of rain or bad weather, there will be no refunds.

Taxis are not allowed past the Estrada dos Paineiras. From that point on, visitors must board special vans to take them through the rest of the way.

The official van service is Paineiras Corcovado, which sells tickets online to make your trip easier. Vans are also available at Praça do Lido, in Copacabana, Praça Largo do Machado, and Estrada das Paineiras

To get to the Corcovado Train, visitors can take the subway and disembark on the Largo do Machado station, and then take a bus to Cosme Velho, where the entrance to the Corcovado Train is located. The train (tirar link do metrô pois o trem do corcovado é diferente do metrô) is the most traditional way of going up the mountain. It goes through the woods, which allows the delightful feeling of experiencing a sudden drop in temperature during the trip.
