The confluence between Rio Negro’s dark waters and the muddy waters of Rio Solimões creates one of the most astonishing natural phenomena in the Amazon region. It is called Encontro das Águas [Meeting of Waters], where both rivers run side by side for miles, without ever touching each other.
One of the main tourist attractions of Manaus, the phenomenon occurs due to a difference in the temperature, density and speed of the rivers: Rio Negro runs at approximately 2 km/h and 28°C, while Rio Solimões runs at 4 to 6 km/h and 22°C.
Several travel agencies offer boat trips to the site, including a trip around the bayou areas, featuring a bountiful display of the local fauna and flora. If you’re lucky, you may even see some pink river dolphins swimming by the boat, as well as other animals such as monkeys and sloths.
Some tours also include a visit to a piracuru farm – one of the largest fish of the Amazon region.
The phenomenon can be seen from airplanes. Make sure you schedule a daytime flight.
