The so-called Paris of the Tropics, because of its intense modernization during the Amazon Rubber Boom (a period of great economic and social growth in Brazil), Manaus is located in the heart of the Amazon Forest. The city inherited, from the Rubber Boom, beautiful buildings, built using fine materials imported from Europe. Amazonas’ Theater is the highlight, with a colorful dome made of 36 thousands of enameled ceramic pieces.

The capital of Amazonas State, Manaus is the main metropolis in the region and the natural entrance for the people who want to visit the Forest. Boats are the main transportation to the rainforest hotels; to see the meeting of waters between Negro and Solimoes rivers; to swim with Amazon River dolphins in Anavilhanas and to visit places such as Praia da Lua.

Tours in broad rivers or narrow igarapes also provide contact with the riverside communities and the opportunity to get to know the indigenous influence at its best. A great feature is the local gastronomy and its exotic dishes. Tacaca is one of the most curious dishes, it is a variety of soup cooked with tucupi, dried shrimp, cassava gum and jambu leaves.

When it comes to fishes, the most famous are baked, stewed or fried tambaqui, matrinxa, jaraqui, tucunare and pirarucu. For desert, we recommend local fruits, such as açai, araça, cupuaçu, graviola, buriti and tapereba. Delicacies can be found in many restaurants of the city, on Ponta Negra’s Beach and even in the street stores.

In Manaus, it rains almost every day and, despite the rain, it is very hot, because the city is close to the equatorial line. Use light clothes and always bring an umbrella. Don´t forget to wear a hat and sunscreen.

We recommend the use of repellents, especially at the sunset, when the mosquitoes usually attack.
Vaccinations of any kind are not mandatory to enter Brazil. However, yellow fever (a disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes bites) vaccination is recommended before the visit. If you are taking the vaccine for the first time, you must take it within 10 days before the trip (this time period is not necessary if you have already taken the vaccine).
