Seven places to buy indigenous art

It is a mistake to think that products produced by Brazilian native people may be purchased only in cities of the North region. We have prepared a list of places where you can buy and take home handicrafts produced with wood, feathers, bamboo and other materials typically used by indigenous communities.

São Paulo (SP)

30 minutes away from São Paulo, in Embu das Artes city, you can buy the most beautiful indigenous handicrafts. The handicraft street market is crowded on weekends. In Pinheiros neighborhood, São Paulo downtown, and in other neighborhoods in the city you will also find many shops that sell authentic objects made by indigenous people, such as baskets, hammocks, pottery, masks, stools, musical instruments and various ornaments.

Rio de Janeiro (RJ)

In the Botafogo neighborhood, Rio de janeiro, Museu do Índio (Indigenous Museum) presents sale exhibitions of indigenous pieces produced in the villages, in order to ensure a source of resources for various ethnic groups. In Santa Teresa, there are also nice shops that sell the wonderful handicraft work of several Brazilian indigenous ethnic groups. There are sandals, earrings, bracelets, bags and many other pieces.

Bonito (MS)

In Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, there is very famous cultural manifestation – the ceramics made by Kadiwéu indians, which is known as Kadiwéu Ceramics. Pots, pans, jars, moringas (clay jars) and plaques are produced and sold. Animals are sold too.

Tocantins (TO)

In Tocantins, the Museu dos Povos Indígenas (Museum of Indigenous Peoples) Yny Heto sells pieces produced by the handicrafters Javaé and Karaja themselves.

Bahia (BA)

Indigenous handicraft is one of the best known Bahia’s cultural aspect. In Porto Seguro, in the Pataxó’s village, in Coroa Vermelha, the Handicraft Center sells earrings, bracelets, necklaces, baskets and other objects produced by the indigenous people. In the region close to Caraíva, at the Environmental Preservation Area of Monte Pascoal, objects made by the indigenous are sold in the village.

Santa Catarina (SC)

In Alto Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina, you can purchase products from the ethnic groups Kaingang, Guarani and Xokleng. There are bows and arrows, earrings, necklaces, hair clips, baskets, rattles, headdresses and many others.

Manaus (AM)

We could not forget to mention the most famous center of this category in Brazil: Manaus. There, you will find great options like indigenous products at the Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa (Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market), on rua do Barés, Central de Artesanato Branco e Silva (Branco e Silva Handicraft Center), on Ypiranga Monteiro avenue and the Galeria Amazônica, on Costa Azevedo street.
