Built shortly after the city’s establishment, Praça da Liberdade was once the seat of power of the state of Minas Gerais. Earlier buildings convey the architectural trends of the time, featuring an eclectic style with neoclassical elements. Over the years, several new buildings were built in the square with different architectural styles.

Strolling through the gardens inspired by the Palace of Versailles and admiring the fountains, monuments and an old bandstand is a common practice among Minas Gerais natives.

The Praça da Liberdade Cultural Circuit outlines the square, featuring old public buildings transformed into cultural and entertainment centers. The Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB) joined this ensemble in 2013, offering an extensive cultural program.

The Palácio da Liberdade – former seat of government in Minas Gerais – resembles an authentic European palace. Vastly decorated and proudly boasting neoclassical elements, the palace leaves all of its visitors in awe.
