Along with Bento Gonçalves and other regional cities, Caxias do Sul is part of the tourist area of Serra Gaúcha named Rota Uva e Vinho [the Grape and Wine Route]. This is not by chance. The region has the largest contingent of Italian immigrants in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and is known for its Grape Festival, which takes place every two years.
Caxias do Sul is a piece of Italy in Brazil, mixed with gaúcho (regional) traditions. The history of the city and immigration is very strong and is partly depicted by the Immigrant National Monument, in the Municipal Museum, and in the Museu de Ambiência Casa de Pedra, a beautiful example of the city's Italian architecture.
Religious reflection is also very striking in Italian and Brazilian cultures, and is present in the São Pelegrino Church, which has paintings of the important Italian-Brazilian painter Aldo Locatelli, and in the Santa Teresa Church, also known as the Diocesan Cathedral.
The city offers several tourist itineraries, each with a different experiences. The Estrada do Imigrante itinerary includes wagon rides, hiking, rock climbing, and colonial cafés – one of the best gastronomic experiences you can have in the South of the country. On the other hand, in the Vale Trentino itinerary, you can visit vineyards, wineries, and canteens, with the Primo Slomp Municipal Museum of Grape and Wine being the main attraction, offering tastings of grapes and grape derivatives.
There are also several other tours. In the Ana Rech itinerary, you enjoy the rich Italian food, music, and handcrafts in a charming village decorated with flowers and pine trees. The Caminhos da Colônia itinerary gathers together landscapes, music and gastronomy and offers a place where you can harvest, stomp and bottle grapes and create your own wine label. The Caminhos do Interior itinerary focuses on the countryside and religion. The Criúva itinerary is perfect for lovers of trekking, horseback riding, rappelling, and rafting.
All of this can be experienced in the beauty of the cold and the snow that falls during the winter in the city, enjoying great days in the hospitality of the local, Brazilian people.
