Maragogipe

Located 157 km from Salvador, the city of Maragogipe (or Maragojipe) displays perfect conditions for nautical tourism, including sport fishing. Its port, receives dozens of canoes, sloops and even large ships.

The term Maragogipe originates from the tupi language. Marag-gyp in the native language of the Indians means "mosquito river". The site was occupied by a tribe of Aimorés Indians and stood on the right bank of the river Peroaçu (later, Paraguaçu) in the location in which it meetss the waters of the Guaí River. For being a region of extensive mangroves, it is a natural habitat for mosquitoes.

The meeting of the waters of the Baia de Todos os Santos with the Paraguaçu River, result in the mangroves, one of the biggest symbols of the Recôncavo Baiano region. Shellfish, crustaceans and fish, all part of this rich ecosystem, represent a source of survival for many residents of the region. Maragogipe has a successful preservation and reforestation of the mangroves project, the Vovó do Mangue (Mangrove Grandma).

The boat trip on the Paraguaçu River is strongly recommended. When sailing you will be able to contemplate vast areas of natural beauty and ruins of the colonial period. The highlight of the adventure is the Saint Antonio do Paraguaçu Convent, in Cachoeira. Cachoeira is a city, neighbor to Maragogipe, and a national monument since 1971, when it was listed as a historical landmark by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan).

The local gastronomy explores seafood dishes such as shrimp stew (typical brazilian cuisine), caldo de lambreta (seafood that is supposed to be an aphrodisiac) and sururu (another seafood) are some options in the menus in the city. The predominant religion is Catholic, but closely engaged with Candomblé.
