Rio Grande do Sul is one of Brazil's 27 Federative Units

Rio Grande do Sul is unique due to the contrast in its climate: in the winter, in mountain areas, snow can fall, covering roofs and fields. In the summer, the sun shines with ease, raising temperatures and leading the gauchos and visitors to beaches such as the Guarita, in Torres. [gauchos = people born in the South region of Brazil]

Porto Alegre, the capital, with its well-kept parks, is one of the greenest cities of Brazil. In the countryside, the main attractions are the Inns in Serra Gaúcha, very sought after in the winter season.

Cities such as Gramado and Canela, with their charming Inns, fondue and good wineries are great for a honeymoon trip and, no wonder, are part of the Romantic Route in the State.

National parks, such as the Aparados da Serra, are excellent for hiking, trekking and rafting. There are also historical destinations that tell an important part of the history of Brazil, such as the ruins of São Miguel das Missões.
