The heart of Bahia is occupied by the huge Chapada Diamantina. Approximately 400 km from Salvador, the Chapada displays a scene of towering rock formations and vast plains covered with typical vegetation from the Cerrado biome.

Today, the right destination for trekking lovers, the region was once occupied by treasure hunters. Hence the name, in reference to the exploration of diamonds in the region.

This phase ended in 1985, with the creation of the Chapada Diamantina National Park (152 thousand hectares), administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for environmental conservation (ICMBio).

In the Park, one of the main attractions is the Morro do Pai Inácio, with a panoramic view of the entire Chapada.

Tourism in the Chapada offers activities for different audiences and with varying degrees of adrenaline. Hiking trails, waterfalls, caves, wells, observatories, is everything that is out there. For you to enjoy the most of it, organize your visit according to the length of stay and preferred practices.

The tourism infrastructure of the Chapada Diamantina is located in thecities of Lençóis, Vale do Capão, Andaraí, Mucugê, Igatu, Ibicoara, Palmeiras, Conceição dos Gatos, Rio de Contas and Morro do Chapéu. Choose one of these locations as a base between the attractions that you will visit in the region.

Lençóis is known for offering the best tourist infrastructure in the Chapada. Igatu, a city preserved by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, offers a beautiful scenery with ruins of stone houses.

Palmeiras is the gateway to the Vale do Capão, where is the Cachoeira da Fumaça is located. The Rio das Contas is the oldest city of the Chapada.

Morro do Chapéu has a huge hill (over 1200 m) in the shape of a hat. Morro do Chapéu has the largest concentration of orchids in Bahia and the region is a natural habitat of a rare species of hummingbird, the Colibri Dourado.

A tip when visiting the Chapada: have a swimsuit always at hand.

The Salvador airport is the nearest airport, located about 4000 km from the Chapada Diamantina.

Personal or rental vehicle
There are paved roads and dirt roads in the Chapada, where it is possible to circulate with everyday cars without the need of special traction. Plan your itinerary in advance, rent a car and hit the road.
