The perfect shot: the best destinations of golf in Brazil

To build a golf course, the first item to be observed is its location. This may seem obvious, but, believe it, it is not.

Aspects such as natural beauty of the place, characteristics of the soil and the embossing and presence of water resources are taken into account (such as rivers and lakes). The combination of these particularities confers the singularity of each field, since one is never equal to the other.

Relatively expensive, the sport has approximately 20,000 practitioners in Brazil, according to data from the Brazilian Golf Confederation, a number that has been growing around 12% a year. These athletes train and compete in one of the 62 official courses and 40 particular ones existing in the country.

São Paulo is the state that has more fields. The one in São Carlos is considered unanimous among specialists, for its design and sophisticated landscaping. In Itu, 170 km away from São Carlos, the structure, design and landscaping are also praised. The one in Araçariguama is classified as peculiar and challenging, since the sharp undulations of the terrain created a route considered difficult. Also complicated is the route of Itupeva, 75 km from São Paulo.

The state of Bahia stands out when it comes to quality golf courses. Designed by the architect Dan Blanckship, in a beautiful region near the sea and the Atlantic Forest, Trancoso is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful in the country. Blanckship also designed the one in the Island of Comandatuba, also along the seashore. Hard to say which of the two impresses the most. The one located in Porto Seguro was built in the midst of the Atlantic Forest, and is known to have the hole 14 on the top of a huge cliff!

In Rio de Janeiro, golfers can take advantage of the course from the Gavea Road, the oldest one in Brazil, with stunning views of the Corcovado, the Tijuca Forest and the Gávea Rock. In Barra da Tijuca is the Olympic Field, highly praised and designed to receive the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Leaving the city a little, Búzios was recently revitalized and now have a modern irrigation system.

The southern region of the country also has good courses, such as that of Pinhais, in Paraná, recommended only to professionals, such is the difficulty of its circuit; and Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, which occupies an area of 55 hectares in the middle of the city.
