Thanks to its splendid wild flora and fauna, Brazil is an incredible country for nature observation tourism. There are great destinations to enjoy animals, such as birds and reptiles in their natural habitats.

However, many people do not know that Brazil is one of the best places to observe the greatest of all mammals, whales. The animals arrive at the Brazilian coast to mate or to escape from the Patagonian cold waters during the winter.

In this itinerary, we indicate some of the best destination for whale watching. No question, an impressive experience.

Day 1
Observation in the capital

Santa Catarina coastline is annually visited by right whales which can measure 18 meters and weigh 80 tons. Fully black body, except for a white spot in the womb, they can dive into great depths and perform apneas of up to 50 minutes.

In Florianópolis, it is possible to observe them in less warm months, usually between June and November. The animals can even be seen in the most popular beaches, such as the Mole and Joaquina.

Day 2
Everything about right whale

Imbituba is 90 km from Florianópolis and it is one of the best place to observe cetaceans in the Southern region of Brazil. The best time for this activity is between June and November when the coast receives right whales that come to mate.

Praia do Rosa is known as a great place for nautical sports such as surfing and stand up paddle (SUP). It is also a nice place for whale observation. Just like the nearby Praia Vermelha.

In Imbituba, be sure to visit the Right Whale Project, which has space for visitation, an animal viewing deck, a research laboratory and a library. Everything to inform the public and help to preserve the species, which is in danger of extinction.

Day 3
From Antarctica to the Northeast

In the Northeast region, the most popular species is the humpback whale, measuring up to 16 meters, weighing 40 tons and swim thousands of miles from Antarctica to Brazil. Observation season is between July to November. During this period, thousands of whales arrive in the Brazilian coast, for the joy of the observers.

In Salvador, capital of Bahia, it is possible to see them at Farol da Barra, one of the historical marks of the city and sometimes at Ponta de Humaitá. However, we recommend to go to Praia do Forte, 80 km from Salvador, where there are organized tours for whale observation. The Humpback Whale Project works for the species preservation, similar work developed in Imbituba.

Prado, 670 km from Salvador, is on the main and best whale observation spots in Brazil. There is the Abrolhos archipelago, home of the Marine National Park. From the islands, there are boat rides that come close to these lovely and harmless animals.

Some itineraries pass through the beautiful Corais de Guaratiba, where it is also possible to dive and admire fish, turtles, manta rays and other varieties of amazing marine life in the region.
