Carnival is one of the events that attracts most tourists to Rio de Janeiro. The party usually takes place in February and one of its highlights is the parade at the Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro, also known as Sambadrome Marques de Sapucai.

In the period that precedes the event, you can also participate in soulful rehearsals in the samba schools courts.

The Sambadrome, designed by the prestigious architect Oscar Niemeyer, opened in 1984. In the four days of the Carnival parades, over two dozen samba schools perform there, with their grand floats, untiring samba dancers called passistas, vibrant drumming, and colorful and luxurious costumes, cheering the party goers – known here as folioes – into the night.

Acknowledged as the world’s greatest celebration, Rio’s Carnival also gathers people in many city spots in the Carnival block parties, where folioes dance on the streets, with or without costumes.

Tips

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes to better enjoy the party.
